At my paranormal blog, Beyond the Veil, we’ve spent the last month talking about our favorite television shows and the delightful pattern of networks increasing their preternatural content. Of course, there are many reasons for this, above all the fact that the supernatural has made serious bank at the box office. From Harry Potter to Twilight, wizard, witches and werewolves have been the talk of Hollywood for the last several years. But there’s a big difference between what works at the box office today and what works for television. Interestingly enough, on television, it’s all about the sex.

When we cozy up to the small screen we want our vampires veracious in the sheets, and our werewolves wonderfully naked as can be. True Blood has set the bar high on the chills and thrills of the naked kind. Even when the story is uneven or, pardon me, anticlimactic, we still eat it up with a spoon if it comes served on a platter of ripped abs and tight glutes.

The Vampire Diaries has followed suit with as much skin as the primetime airwaves will allow. Like True Blood before it, at the heart of all our sexy moments on TVD is a love triangle and a lovely young woman left to decide between the gorgeous good guy and the beautiful bad boy. I may prefer to write and read ménage, but as a viewership, we love our love triangles, the more tragic and supernatural-y, the better.

Creatures aren’t the only ones in the paranormal realm that get to shed their shirts and make us swoon. As luscious as they may look, we know that sometimes our favorite creatures need to be hunted down and taken care of. And no two hunters look as good ridding the world of evil as Dean and Sam Winchester on the CW show Supernatural. These hunky hunters are always ready to help a damsel in distress and they’re beautiful enough to have taken both a demon and an angel to bed. Now how many folks can say that? *grin*

The FOX show Fringe gives us Peter Bishop and Olivia Duhnam, the thinking man and woman’s weekly eye candy. Their sizzling sexual tension drew us in and the eventual consummation blew us away for so many interesting reason. But despite the human story in the preternatural setting, like Supernatural before it and the coming Grimm on NBC, we find the sexy in the super rather than the natural side, but we love the humanity of it all. And nothing makes us more human than the moment the clothes come off and even emotions are left nude and vulnerable.

I think witches, vampires and most recently werewolves have become the ultimate sex symbols, because they epitomize the loss of control we crave, contrasted with the incredible power we covet. There’s intimacy in the movement of magic, in the changing of skin and as always, in the consuming of blood. That intimacy used to stand in for all the intimacy we desired, and in modern times stands beside it, as we’re free to look at our fantasies for all they’re worth. Indeed, contemporary shows are full of sex, but there’s nothing quite like the sex that comes with an edge of danger of the supernatural kind. Whether we’re ogling the hunted or the hunter.

How Did I End up Like This?

For those who haven’t heard, the Oscar Mayer Wienermobile (or rather the Wienermobiles, there are 6 of them) is doing a huge, nationwide tour in honor of it’s 75th anniversary. It recently made a stop in my town, and being a bit of a fan, I took my kids out to see it. We stood in line, got stickers and weenie-whistles (because there is nothing at all off with handing out 2 inch weenies for people to blow) but more importantly, we got pictures of the Wienermobile.

In my enthusiasm, I emailed pictures to my family, some of whom didn’t even know the Wienermobile existed.

The next day, Mom called to chat. She said she loved the pics and that it looked like a fun outting and that she thought my littlest monster was particularly cute when he was hugging the… um… vehicle.

The Vehicle.

The hesitation, that moment of searching for a word, suddenly alerted me to something I hadn’t noticed before. My dear, sweet, Jesus-loving mama can’t make herself utter the word ‘wiener’. Neither can the rest of my family.

Every now and then something like this reminds me of how different I am from anyone else in my family. They are classical music and I’m heavy metal. They read some literary stuff sometimes and I devour erotica like it’s the air I breathe. I’m messy, they’re neat. I’ve got a filthy mind and they have pure souls.

I never fit in very well. I still don’t fit in with my family very well. I listen to my music loud, read erotic books and don’t worry about what people see when they look at me.

And I love to tease my mom by rattling her conservative cage just a little with words like Wienermobile.

Introducing Amy Ruttan- What I think is sexy

So much has been said here by my fellow SS&Sers about what they find is sexy and I kind of have to agree with their fantastic posts, which meant (darn it) what the heck was I going to talk about?

 

There are so many things I find sexy, but I’ll only focus on one the look … you know the look. The look Mr. Darcy (Colin Firth) gave to Elizabeth Bennett in 1996 version of Pride and Prejudice.

The look which, without any words, said I’m going to devour you whole if I get the chance. His simmer glance which holds you there and makes your toes curl, your blood heat and your heart pound. It’s the look which makes me want to leap through the screen and surrender to him.

The fact he had a wonderful British accent just topped the cake for me.

I am a bit of a sucker for accents. I love them, but that’s a whole ‘nother post. *grin*

That crackling tension is what is sexiest to me. Whether in a book or movie, it’s the undercurrent in the air which is the sexiest thing for me.

The first moment I realized it was the first time I saw Phantom of the Opera. I’m not begrudging Gerard Butler, oh no he was a fantastic Phantom, but I’m talking the first time I saw it on stage. The sexual tension the first moment the Phantom walked across the stage to drag Christine down below the Opera House had me swooning.

The way he looked at her, sang to her, barely touching her conveyed all the passion he could muster without touching her.

Especially in the song Past the Point of No Return, that has my heart beating a bit faster every time I think of it.

What the Victorian’s would call the chaste stolen glances, those looks under the flutter of eyelashes and tingeing of cheeks is what I find sexy.

The silent seduction, silent flirting, the build up to the big moment does it for me. I love writing those scenes. I love dragging out tension for as long as I possibly can before the big bang, as it were.

Sexy for me is in the subtle look which conveys a promise of a hot erotic night.

What’s sexy to me?

Hmm, good question. The answer, seduction.

A dangeroulsy flirtatious glance. A raised eyebrow. A slow sensual smile. A conversation filled with sexual innuendo. Fingers entwined with your own. A thumb brushing the back of your hand. Palm pressure in the small of your back. A sense of humor and a deep filthy masculine laugh that is pure verbal foreplay. The feel of fingertips gently stroking your neck then trailing over the top of your breast. Breath moving your hair.  A deep male voice purring in your ear, telling you what he’s going to do to you and how much he plans to make you enjoy it.  Dark eyes filled with lust. Warm lips and day old stubble brushing your body. Hard muscles beneath soft masculine skin. A meaningful lust filled chuckle. A slow seductive glide of a hand along your thigh. Warm lips claiming yours. A deep intense toe curling kiss and, finally, complete and utter abandonment to the moment.

Now I think I need a cigarette, or a strong drink, or both!

Lolita Lopez–What’s Sexy to Me?

It’s funny. I sat down to write this post and was sure it would be an easy one to finish but then I realized that what I find sexy is constantly evolving. Ten years ago, when I was still in high school, I had my heart set on a certain kind of guy. Nowadays that guy would turn me off like a light switch. At that time, I hadn’t fully accepted that I could be attracted to a woman either. These days, I shamelessly appreciate the Megan Foxes and Sara Ramirezes of the world.

Oh, sure, I still find all the usual things sexy. Show me a guy or gal who is funny, kind, and well-read and I’ll just swoon. What I really like? Va-va-voom women with bold laughs and great smiles. Older men, not quite to the silver fox stage, but the kind brimming with confidence and wisdom. Give me big men with strong hands, broad shoulders and facial hair. No surprise that I married an older guy who looks like a throwback to the Viking Age, huh?

I find people who are confident in their sexuality incredibly appealing. A person who is secure in his or her desires and fantasies makes me all tingly and excited. I want a lover who isn’t afraid to experiment and try new things, to push boundaries and use those safe words.

Ten years ago, if you’d told me that watching my husband embrace his role as a father would get me all hot and bothered, I’d have laughed in your face. Before I became a mom, I couldn’t fathom why all these friends of mine swore their husbands were sexier as daddies. Now I get it.

Welcome to another “what is sexy” installment. As I’m sure you can tell from reading, sexy is so different for each person you ask. I hope this isn’t your first visit and that you’ll be making many more. I’ll be seducing you here every other Monday. Sexy. To me, sexy is what you are. I don’t think it’s something anyone can learn. You either are or you aren’t. Luckily, everyone has a different definition of what sexy is. Everyone is sexy to someone.

Sexy takes a variety of forms. I love men. I love men with long hair, although I’m not opposed to short hair either. Seeing that I’m a very visual person, I love abs, muscular builds and intense eyes. A nicely filled out pair of jeans on a man will also get my head turning and my mind wandering. I love the animalistic instinct men can get. The more they show me they are a man, the more I want to be a woman. I love a bad boy, tattoos and piercings; the man that’s not afraid to throw the first punch. He’ll be the one to just do something rather than talking about it. It’s all about showing me.

Never one to limit my men, I love men with other men. Hot. Sexy.  It captures such a different essence of being. The love, the trust, the knowledge of knowing their partner. As a woman I can be with a man for years, but I’ll never truly know him the way another man would. I even find three men together beautiful. They seem to share such a wonderful bond. They can be best friends and partners.

Sexy is also an attitude. I love confidence–borderline arrogance. I love a man that knows exactly what he wants and has the confidence to get it. The man that knows he’s the “it” that fits. The man that will let me stare, show off a little for me and let me watch. Then, approach me and not take no for an answer, then show me even more.

Experimentation is sexy. Trust is sexy. Allowing for those moments where you may be out of your own comfort zone and trying something you aren’t sure about simply because your partner wants to. This can be in something as simple as food or as personal as in the bedroom. Complete trust and handing over that control (which can be difficult) is sexy, to me, in a way that I almost can’t describe. The sexy may even come more in that trust than in the actual experimentation.

I like no limitations on sexy. The sight of a beautiful woman is sexy. It’s in the confidence of her walk, the flip of her hair. To me, it doesn’t matter if she prefers men or women. The comfort she has with herself makes her sexy.

Take it from me — Don’t limit your sexy.

Hands. I love slender, strong hands with long fingers and well-cared-for nails. I like to watch them work – building, cooking, sewing, playing music.

Noses. I am partial to noses with character. Many of the greatest noses are large, well-formed promontories with personality.

Intelligence. I looove me some brains. Smart is sexy. Dumb is a turn-off. I don’t necessarily mean that a person has to have a high I.Q.; I am more referring to curiosity and ignorance. I can’t stand ignorance, particularly of the willful variety (“I just don’t want to know anything about thus-and-such”). When people who are under, say, a hundred years of age, saying that they have learnt all they need to is just stupid. We should never stop learning, being curious, being interested in the world around us. That, in short, is sexy as hell.

On men, slender abdomens with a muscular indentation just left of center, above the pelvic girdle. On women, boobs.

Hey. I can’t be ALL poetical!

It’s funny how sexuality runs the gamut from high art (Caravaggio) to straight up porn (Redtube). I don’t have a good definition of what sexy IS, but I know humankind has been obsessed with it for millennia. We write about it, draw it, do it, talk about it, fight wars over it…  A friend once described it as the “Fuck it or kill it” impulse.  I think he’s onto something.

In my experience, I find Story sexy.  I like to know the characters, whether it’s of a lover or in a book.  I like to know backstory.  I don’t find static images sexy, unless it’s catching something in the act.  Just showing nudity isn’t particularly sexy to me – it can be pretty, but it’s the motion that makes it erotic.

On the other hand, I love Edward Weston’s peppers, so maybe it’s the kind of static image.  What is the artist saying through their art?  Emotional honesty gets me every time.  The courage to speak one’s truth, in the face of possible penalty, is rare – and precious.  That sort of strength can be as attractive as catnip.

Subtlety and humor, as well, can be terrifically erotic.  Some of the modern culture’s obsession with show-all clothing and behavior is profoundly off-putting.  Jerseylicious is just trash, in my estimation.  Plastic and fake.  On the other hand, one of the things I find erotic about True Blood is the subtlety of the main characters.  Bill is a gentleman.  He’s also a man, and unapologetic about that fact.  But he treats his attractions with subtlety, and that makes me curious about him.

Ultimately, the drive to discover what titillates us can take us lifetimes.  What is sexy to you?

I think using words within the context of the English language is important, so when I am trying to pick the right word or differentiate between two words I always pull out a dictionary. By “pull out” I now mean look it up online. Of course the question of the month is what is sexy to me? Well, I think sexy takes many forms and varying depths.

I find men sexy.

I’m a woman. I’m a woman who likes men. I like the contrast of their strength to my softness. I like the confidence they often exude…it’s like a drug. I like strong hands that are a little rough from being used. The way they smell…with and without cologne. I like their flat nipples and the challenge of making them pucker up. I have recently discovered that I like men with glasses. Sssshhhh. Don’t tell my husband, but he looks really sexy with his new glasses.

I find women sexy.

That’s right…I’m a heterosexual woman and I find women sexy.  I like our soft curves. The way our hair can shine like silk. I think a woman with sex in mind has a certain seductiveness that is unmistakable and very sexy. I like long curvy legs topped by a nice round bump of ass on a woman. I love women in lingerie. Feminine women are sexy.

I find minds sexy.

I love an intelligent person. Someone who can discuss and debate history or politics. Talk to me of science, or pop culture, social mores or cultural dynamics. Stimulate my brain and other things will eventually follow.

I find lots of things sexy, some of them are inanimate. High heels make me feel sexy. I think that is something I picked up from my childhood, and well I’ll save that discussion for another post. Certain dresses make me feel sexy.  Something in a slinky material, spaghetti straps, and a low-cut back? I have this pair of Marc Fisher shoes that make me feel sexy. Four inch heels, white and black patent leather in a spectators style.

Mmmm… I find anything clothing-wise from the 40’s and 50’s sexy. I’m sure it was a lot of work, but women looked good all the freaking time. I think there was a feminine quality to women that we don’t teach our girls anymore. But again…that’s another post. (I hope someone is taking notes here. I have a few posts to write.) Like I said at the beginning sexy has a lot of forms and depths for me. I’m nothing if not complicated.

Alrighty! Let’s get a move on, shall we? Voirey has already introduced the group, so now it’s time to give you a little insight into who I am and what I’ll be doing at SS&S. Every other Wednesday, I’ll be here with my new feature, Wednesday Ramble, letting you in on the inner workings of the erotic paranormal ménage writer’s mindset. It’s bound to be a trip!

I’ve been smiling over our theme of what is sexy, from the moment it was introduced. There are as many definitions of sexy as there are people to experience it, but no matter how we each define it, like art and pornography, we all know sexy when we see it. It’s fitting considering that sexiness spans the spectrum of art to porn.

We know sexy bodies when we see them, although we’re never quite looking at the same things, in the same way. Broad shoulders and washboard abs on him, a high swell of the breasts and tight curve of the waist on her, our eyes are captured by these things, but they’re just the window dressing. Even when we think sexy only comes in a physical package there’s something underneath. For me, I’m all about the eyes and the smile. What I love most is when a smile reaches the eyes with such mirth that they crinkle in the corners. Why? Because there’s nothing sexier than sincerity!

Sincere joy is the sexiest of all, but all genuine displays of self just draw me in. I equally want to embrace someone being open and free, with their head thrown back as laughter takes them, as I do someone with their head down, lost in their book or computer screen, furiously trying to figure out a math problem or solve a puzzle. The unadulterated sharing of grief and loss touches my heart and pushes my buttons, in the same way as an unabashed display of awe and discovery. It all pulls me close and urges me to strip off the barrier of clothing to mimic the emotional and intellectual nudity of the moment.

And those sincere moments, they are truly vulnerable moments, naked and open without any attempts to hide behind the facades we build to move through society. They’re also strong moments, but it’s a natural strength, a glimpse of inner fortitude that we sometimes don’t even know we have.

I think the aspect of sincerity we universally find sexy is creativity. When we read a feast of emotional storytelling, or watch an impassioned performance, or listen to someone’s heart and soul poured out against a musical backdrop, their sincerity washes over us. We laugh and cry and move and love and hate, in time to these expressions. There’s a reason that musicians get laid more than anybody else! Just look at the bands that have hit it big and their sexiness is obviously not about being fair of face and ripped of body.

How many tortured artist have also equally been lotharios? Women and men alike have disrobed and laid themselves bare to the mercy of the painter’s brush and sculptor’s chisel and even the author and musician’s pen. They have eagerly offered up their visage and virtue to embody the muse for the medium at hand in hopes of witnesses that sincere moment expressed in the stroke of genius that is capturing the human form or the human condition for all time.

What I love about writing poly romance, is that all of these expressions are open to me to compare and contrast between characters. I can bring in the alpha male of impressive physicality and show his vulnerability in love, loss or song. I can pair him with a beta male, (also of impressive physicality), and show his strength in joy, companionship or upon canvass. I bring in an alpha female, (I write erotic romance, let’s face it, everyone is of impressive physicality), and can play with all of the expressions in between, creating a continuum that highlights a simple truth—that their sincerest moments are their best. And their sexiest!

So what about all of you? Have you ever fantasized about crawling into a professor’s lap and taking them from their work with your attentions? Does the thought of an impassioned sculptor running calloused hands down your body make you shiver? Do you wish to get lost in the taste and texture of your favorite musician as their songs play in the background? Does it tingle in all the right places to think of consoling your favorite actor in their moment of grief, until finally the only relief to be found in one another’s flesh? In short, do you think those sincere moments that bare our hopes and fears to the world are sexy?

Looks like I’ve been nominated to kick off this whole shebang (No pressure!) so I’ll start with the basics. On behalf of the group let me say…

Welcome to Silken Sheets & Seductions!

We’re a group of eight authors who write erotic romance and erotica and we’re all glad you stopped by today. As part of our debut we’re having a huge, and I mean HEE-OOOGE, giveaway. Stop by the giveaway page and check it out, and while you’re there, leave a welcome message to be entered in the prize drawings.

When you’re talking to erotic authors, the mind automatically goes to sex. Sex is universal. Wherever there are people, there is sex.

But one thing that became very apparent in the planning of this undertaking was that while sex is universal, sexiness isn’t. We debated everything from photos to wording and even what kind of united image we wanted to portray to you, our readers. There was never a group-wide agreement. Our sexies overlapped in places but never fully agreed.

I suppose when anybody talks about something being sexy, it’s a personal opinion, a public comment to a private feeling. Of course as an author, my private feelings are laid bare for public consumption. My sexy is on display for everyone, whether their sexy overlaps mine or not.

When I first began writing, I thought writing erotic meant acting as a mirror, that it was my job to write things that reflected what other people found arousing. Stories with that kink sell well so that’s what I am supposed to write.

Somewhere along the line a a realization trickled in and my thoughts transformed. My job wasn’t to write to others’ tastes, it was to show what was sexy about mine. I started writing my own ideas and shared why they worked for me. I stopped trying to live up to other people’s vision of sexy and embraced my own.

So, what is my idea of sexy?

To me, it’s not wrapped up in a kink or a body type or attitude. Not that I can’t find those thing sexy, they just aren’t what ultimately yanks my crank.  My biggest turn-on is vulnerability.

There is just something about the feeling of being at the mercy of something bigger, something stronger. It’s a reminder that we are ultimately fragile beings. It forces us to allow someone else to take the reins. Most of all it demands we trust someone else with our bodies and our pleasure, and in many ways, trusting someone with your whole self is even more intimate than sex itself.

Vulnerability takes many forms in my writing. Sometimes it’s physical; a character being at the mercy of many, or simply overpowered by one. Sometimes it comes with surrender or bondage, pleasure or pain. There is always a mental vulnerability, whether it be a woman who feels flawed or an angel exploring his darkest temptation.

But vulnerability brings baggage with it. Insecurities and certain raw reality always come up. Being vulnerable means facing fears, dealing with the little defects we all try to hide. It’s not always a pretty process. It can be heartbreakingly painful. But ultimately facing those shortcomings, those fears and imperfections, leads to a greater strength and confidence.

So what is sexy to me? It’s surrender. It’s courage. It’s strength.

That’s what’s sexy to me.
