Thanks for this Sofia. I think layering is a great idea for working on sex scenes. This post came at just the right time to help me as I’m working on a sex scene yoday and yes, I’m finding it a tough job making sure the emotion is where it should be.

Very sensual scene. Well done. It flows nicely.

Sex scenes are difficult to write. To do one sex scene in one book is not that hard, but to do multiple sex scenes per book (in multiple books) is challenging to make them all different. But what I find is that if the sex is not gratuitous, if it is an integral part of the story and reveals something about the characters’ character and/or advances the plot, it’s easier, because the plot guides the scene. The way the characters have sex reveals something about their situation, it’s not about two horny people scratching an itch.

I am not an author, but as a reader the emotional and physical build-up is as important as the sex itself, if not, more so. I have read scenes of hot and heavy conversation or kissing that have more sexual intensity, than some hard-core bedroom gymnastics.

I want to be drawn in, seduced, if you will. Sure, there are times characters should just “go for it.” But, the scenes that stay with me, that I re-read or replay in my mind are layered, just as you described above.

Since I am not a fan of YA or NA, I am a stickler for age-appropriate activities and couplings. Large age differences (more than 8 or 9 years) and actions that have a hint of repression/abuse/stalking, creep me out. (Safe/sane D/s relationships, written by someone who had experience in the lifestyle, or done extensive research, can be HOT. Needing to have paramedics on call, is not.)
