My First Time

Celebrating the launch of my first story with Liquid Silver Books, I’m blogging about other Firsts of mine.

Sex. So natural. So instinctive. Something most adults on the planet have tried at least once… so why is it so damned hard to write?

The first sex scene I wrote was very vague. Remember, this was some fifteen years ago when even the most titillating of bodice rippers usually skimmed over the act itself. I wanted my experienced hero to be passionate and intense, but since he was seducing a virgin, I needed him to be gentle too.

I spent days writing their first scene together. No matter what I did, it felt wooden and awkward. I ended up putting < insert sex > and left it on the backburner while I rocked on with the story. Their second coupling was just as difficult to write and I struggled. The story continued with another placeholder < insert sex > and then another further on, and finally I reached the last page. I hesitated over typing ‘The End’. After all, I hadn’t finished and my leading characters had been left hanging several times (so they really hadn’t finished), but in all other respects the story was complete. What did I do?

I went back, added some general skimming and left it all high level and light… then filed it away on my hard drive and left it.

The next manuscript had an equally light touch in the bedroom, and the one after that. It was only after taking a break for a few years, reading zillions of books, and the explosion of smexy into general availability, that I had the courage to go back and rework my dusty manuscripts. I can happily report they are much more exciting now, and might even get published.

I wish I could tell you that writing sex scenes now is easy, but you know what? It’s not. I still agonise over them and take days to write them, revising and re-revising several times before I’m done. I’d chat with one of my critique partners about IKEA-sex, you know, insert Tab-A into Slot-B, rotate and re-insert at a different angle, and I developed a routine. Layering. Yep, like with clothes, I write the scene in layers, taking a break between each one:

1.      The bra & panties layer – the basic stuff

Who and where, general mood and the physical details (Tab-A, Slot-B and so on).

2.      The slinky tank top layer – details

The way her breath hitches, the intensity on his face, how she digs her nails into his back.

3.      The t-shirt and jeans layer – all the senses

The sound of the bed creaking, her heart racing, the perfume from the lilac bush underneath the bedroom window, the taste of his skin.

4.      The cashmere sweater layer -  emotion

What he’s feeling when she closes her hand around him. How she feels when he sinks his teeth into her shoulder.

At this point it’s almost done, just one final read through and it’s ready for my critique partner to rip to shreds… and then I revise it some more.

So no, it doesn’t get any easier, but at least I have a way to manage it now

If you write smexy, how do you approach the sex scenes? Or are they easy? Is is just me that feels like an absolute novice every time my couple start bumping uglies?

My elder son was bar mitzvah’d this weekend and my younger son saw his movie acting debut in a local cable film.  This was on Saturday.  Before that 1) my father in law died in January 2) my mother in law died less than two weeks ago 3) I prepared for Saturday’s reception for 90 guests which had more details than I expected (of course) 4) I finished editing two anthologies with Scott Goudsward (Once Upon an a Apocalypse. Volume I – Zombie Fairytales Volume II – Lovecraft Fairytales 5) I completed the 30 articles for the non-fiction newsletter I am the editor for. 6) I edited the book I acquired for Ravenous Romance.  Oh, and in between all this was the regular day to day stuff of life and homeschooling.

I’m exhausted.

Too much of a roller coaster for me.  I’d like that for my characters – not in my life.  I am so ready for calm waters, smooth sailing and any other cliché that involves quiet and a general lack of turbulence.

I want to get back to my writing projects, the things that fill me up and make me feel as though I am smiling inside and out.

And leave the drama for the characters I create and the books I read.  Thank you!

I have a weakness for corporate-romances. Maybe it stems from years of working in nosy offices where the grapevine reports news faster than the management, and everyone knows at least one person that’s doing the dirty on the side. It’s an environment where illicit romances thrive faster than you can say “Toner Running Low”. The little accidental touches by the water cooler, and the steamy looks in the kitchen that are nothing to do with the leftovers-for-lunch bubbling away in the microwave.

And what could be more illicit than the PR girl hired to clean up the image of the loud-mouthed executive? She’s being paid to make him publicly acceptable to his board of directors, not to sleep with him. If her boss finds out she’s mixing business with pleasure, she’ll be fired. If his board finds out, they’ll assume he’s thumbing his nose at them – again.

This is the delightful premise of Allyson Lindt’s Conflict of Interest, the first in her new series Bits & Bytes.

To make it even more tantalising, Kenzie has already met Scott in their local coffee shop, where they had an almost-thing one rainy day.

She approached the empty spot before she could talk herself out of it and forced confidence into her voice. “Excuse me.”

“Hmmm?” He barely moved his head, immersed in something on his phone.

“Is this seat taken?”

He pulled his attention away from the screen long enough to let his gaze rake over her. A flicker of a smile tugged up the corner of his mouth before he turned back to the phone. “It is now, help yourself.”

He offers her a ride home since it’s raining heavily.

How had she ended up in this man’s car in the pouring rain, toeing the line of indecent conversation and fantasizing about stripping off his wet clothes?

They get interrupted before they get too far and go their separate ways. Phew. I was fanning myself at their close encounter, and that was before the story really got started. I adored Scott straight away. He’s noisy and confident, says what he’s thinking (usually without filtering it) and the kind of sexy geek that really has no idea how gorgeous he is. His social skills need a little polishing, but since he works as a game designer, he spends most of his time with other geeks anyway.

Disbelief mingled with laughter. “Are you always so forward?”

Frequently, to the dismay of his board of directors. A shadow passed through the shop as clouds covered the sun outside. “Only until it gets me slapped. You?”

I dived into this book expecting a light and frothy read, but then Allyson Lindt side-swiped me. I didn’t even see it coming. One minute they’re flirting in the office and then, boom! I caught a glimpse of the real Scott lurking underneath his scruffy t-shirted exterior. A flash of vulnerability.

For a moment – as he frequently did during these meetings – Scott wished he still drank. He focused on his water and hoped he could be polite when appropriate.

And just as quickly, it was gone and Mr Cocky was back in his place. I was officially hooked.

“As you’re so fond of pointing out, I approached you.”

He stared back in disbelief, his familiar crooked smile in place. “And you’ve also confessed it was completely out of character for you.”

“Does it matter if I’d ever done it before?”

“It does to me.” He picked at his vegetables. “I like thinking I was your first for something. It’s good for a guy’s ego, right?”

The romance leaps forward, staggers back a pace or two and then marches on again, but always with the realisation that Kenzie is in big trouble if their relationship comes to light. I really felt for Scott. He thought he was making headway with her, only to be shoved back in his place, time and again. Kenzie is hard work, and every time Scott asked himself if she was worth the angst, I felt his pain.

“It’s all about appearances.”

“Of course.” He traced a finger up the back of her bare neck. “Appearances are important.” His voice was low and smooth. “So help me out because I think I’m still missing something.” His fingertips glided along her collarbone. “I’m not allowed to flirt where someone might see.” He trailed up her jaw. “But behind closed doors you can do whatever you want.” His breath brushed the outside of her ear. “And then you throw a fit when I finally act the way you tell me to.”

“So I can have you right now?” His hungry growl rolled through the room. “While no one is watching?”

She wanted to be bold, aggressive, in control. But she wanted him more. “Yes.”

He let go and stepped away until the door stopped him. He clasped his hands behind his back, gaze never leaving her. “So you can keep your job and still get what you want? So you don’t have to tell anyone the scruffy-looking nerfherder with the massive ego made you scream in pleasure just by talking to you?”

At somewhere around 80% (I can’t be sure, I was devouring the pages too quickly), things between Scott and Kenzie go from not-too-good, to what-the-fuck-just-happened, and I couldn’t put my Kindle down.

“I told you when you hired me it had to be clear you had done so because of my professional skills. Now I have to reassure my employer that I’m actually doing my job instead of playing some executive’s afternoon distraction.”

Allyson Lindt drew the characters very well. Yes, there were misunderstandings, but they didn’t feel forced or contrived. Scott had his secrets and his reasons for keeping them, while Kenzie was a much more open character. The sex was hot! This is a fantastic steamy debut, so get your hands on a copy now, before the author gets famous and her books shoot up in price :-)

I can reveal there is a sequel on the way, featuring Kenzie’s nothing-like-her twin sister, Riley. I will be watching out for that as soon as it’s available

Pumping Up The Sexual Volume. 

The class is all about how to write sex scenes. Of course, I like it hot so that’s where I focus, but really the purpose is to help anyone stuck on writing sex and help them work through it. I’ve heard tons of writers say they skip writing them until last or they have to struggle through writing them with the aid of a bottle of wine…sometimes two. LOL!

Writing sex should be fun!

So, I endeavor to break my process down into steps and tools that an author can use to write sex scenes. The class is meant for anyone looking to ramp up the heat level of their writing, is looking to push their writing boundaries, or newbies who have never attempted to write a sex scene.

This course gets down and dirty. We talk body parts and we do a lot of writing. Because the best way to figure out how to do it is–to do it! I will be teaching it later this summer for RWA San Diego and it will be open to the public for a fee. When I have the details I will be sure to post them in case anyone might be interested.

 in Kauai. The food, the beaches, the spa day I’m so excited! VACATION!!

Needless to say, it’s been hard to keep my mind on track this week. I should be pounding the keyboard working to the end of my first draft, but all I can think about is sandy beaches and wondering how much sunblock I should pack—I have ridiculously pale skin LOL! I feel like a little kid all hopped up and waiting for the bell to ring on the last day of school. I just wanna go already.

Anyone been to Kauai? Got any tips on what I have to pack or sights I must see? Not that I need any encouragement on the distraction front. I’m quite capable of slacking off all on my own

I promise to post some awesome pics of our vacation next month. Because I know ya’ll are curious and not to rub it in or anything :-p

So this week was supposed to be our first big vacation since kiddo was born. We were going to celebrate 12 whole months without a surgery or hospitalization–but DH fell down the stairs and the inlaws got a tummy bug so we’re now enjoying a staycation.

I’m a fan of covers with models entwined or placed in seductive poses. The freaky side of me likes to be affirmed that there will be sex in the book and hopefully a lot of it with explicit details. But with the popularity of Twilight and 50 Shades of Grey covers have moved to obscure objects photographed with artistic eyes.

I would have loved to have seen the Cullen kids, shirtless and exposing chiseled abs and fang. Who’s with me on a vote to have Christian Grey featured, shirtless (yes, I like shirtless) and with a nipple clamp (of course) and maybe biting his lower lip…and also holding a whip. Well hello there!

I’m Eva Lefoy and I’m very happy to be here today, introducing myself as the newest member of Silken Sheets & Seduction. Did you see my photo to the left? It’s kind of sexy, requires a little bit of exercise and there’s a snappy looking gal in the photo. That probably describes my mindset quite a bit. I tend to be:

1. Sexy! I like to write sexy scenes and let my imagination run wild. It might be M/M, M/M, F/F or any combination thereof. Keeping the body parts straight is always a concern of mine!

2. I like a bit of exercise. Yep. Yesterday I went on a 2-hour hike and had a very good time. I also run and do yoga. Of course that doesn’t prevent me from loving wine and beer and chocolate and cheese! Talk to me about cheese and I’ll write you one sexy story!

3. A snappy personality. Not pushy. Not over bearing. Just … energetic and witty. At least I like to think so! On certain days my husband might call it exhausting…

The interaction between these two was a joy to write and I hope you enjoy reading as much as I enjoyed creating it.

“You’re disgusting.” She didn’t know why that surprised her. His kind were vulgar, repulsive, crude, and despicable, just to name a few of their better qualities. Ariel took a seat on the sofa and watched him carefully. She never let her guard down in front of an enemy.

Laughing, he poured his drink then much to her surprise, plopped down beside her. “Should we see what’s on TV?”

“Do as you wish. I have no desire to partake in such mundane festivities.”

“My, that stick up your ass is jammed in there tight.”

“I have no stick up my…derriere, and how dare you insinuate such a thing.”

He patted her leg and made her pulse speed up. “Oh darling, you are too much fun. Okay, let’s see what we have here.”

He selected a channel called Adult Entertainment while she wondered how long she had to stick around to prove her point. He had said all night, but surely an hour was enough. Ariel lifted a magazine from the coffee table and flipped the pages as he perused the selection on the TV screen.

She could admit to herself that she found him attractive, but she couldn’t tell him. His dreamy stare made her heart flutter, not to mention the way it sent moist heat in her loins. Her pulse had quickened when he’d touched her leg. What a horrible creature. He sat on the sofa, staring at the TV. One hand held a glass, which rested on his thigh, the other lay on his crotch. Then reality struck and reminded her that he happened to be a demon. “Fine!” She pushed away and plopped down on the sofa. What nerve.

“As if.” She huffed. So much for her tryst. She’d been so eager to have a man touch her. Instead, she’d been paired with a…beast.

“I will make you a bet that before this show ends you will plant that sweet, tight ass back on my lap and ride my long, hard cock.”
