October is hands-down my favorite month of the year. It’s my birthday month (yay!) and also hosts Halloween, my favorite favoritest holiday. On October 1st, I unleash my inner Martha Stewart and create these elaborate menus showcasing spooky foods and desserts for the entire month. I break out the plastic containers of decorations and hit up the good sales and make honey-do lists for my husband. I pull together all my favorite creepy movies and shows for little marathons while the kiddo is napping or in bed at night.
This is also the time of year my writing focus shifts to the paranormal side of things. I don’t know what it is but every year in late September I get the hankering to write about witches and demons and ghosts and vampires. I start conjuring up all these fantastically dirty and supernatural ideas for short stories and novellas. I try to write them all down, and I always promise myself I’ll tackle a couple of them. Some years I do and some I don’t.
This is a “do” year. I’m putting aside a different project for the month of October to focus on the supernatural and the spooky and the sexy. I’m going to glom Charmed and Reaper episodes and crack open some old school Christine Feehan Carpathian books and saturate myself in the paranormal. I want to get the tone just right for these stories.
So what about you? Do your interests turn toward the creepy and macabre in October? Do you find yourself breaking out the Halloween tunes (Monster Mash, anyone?) or scary movies? Or are you not a fan of Halloween and the spine-chilling, the eerie and the disturbing?
