wpid-aaasorcha_finalsig.pngI write hot. I write not. And I do it all pretty much the same way. Each scene must exist to move the plot forward or to develop the characters. If an author is not covering one or both of these bases, they’re doing it wrong.

If a reader finds themselves skimming sex scenes then I’d say there is one of a few common problems with the writing.

  1. Gratuitous Sex – Look, we all know sex sells, and erotic romance is doing a brisk business. But, if a reader wants to read sex for the sake of sex, they’ll likely pick up some erotica. Romance readers need more than just hot sex. Bottom line, there is such a thing as too much of a good thing.
  2. Stale Sex – Maybe the whole book is stale. Maybe just the sex. If the whole work is boring readers are probably skimming through if they haven’t simply skipped to the last chapter or simply DNF’d it. If the rest of the writing is engaging, but the intimate moments are dry or stiff then the writer is likely uncomfortable writing sex or they are just as bored writing it as readers are reading it. I’ll say it, all authors need a little variety. It can be hard coming up with new and interesting ways to give characters intimacy and keep it hot.
  3. Meaningless Sex – Even in erotica, sex has a purpose and motivation, it’s just not romantically inclined. In erotic romance, sex needs to have meaning…even the teeniest-tiniest-bit. Each scene needs to convey something about the characters and or the plot. If the reader skims it they should be missing something more than his cock or her pussy!

So, writing hot or not should be dictated by your story and your characters. And if the sex is an intricate and key element of your plot? Then you’re definitely doing it right.

Pumping Up The Sexual Volume

Have you ever read your sex scenes and thought, eh? Do you pick up other author’s books and wish you could write those scorching hot love scenes? Maybe you just want to turn up the sexual heat a notch or two in your own writing? Then this is the class for you.

In Pumping Up The Sexual Volume we are going to talk about how to develop a sex scene step by step, give you some tools to accomplish just that, and then give you a chance to try it all out in a safe place where feedback will be provided.

Once this class is done you should be able to write sizzling hot love scenes that include:

  • Simmering sexy kisses
  • Ovation worthy oral sex
  • Mind boggling intercourse

And it will all be done with purpose. This class is intended to be writing intensive, so get your fingers warmed up and your muses ready and raring to go!

CAUTION: This course is about sex. I will use graphic language and we may discuss sexual acts that you personally are uncomfortable with. Everyone has their comfort zone. I will do my best to keep the discussion on topic and pertinent to the class, but if you write inspirational or sweet romances—this is probably not the class for you. Consider yourself warned.
