Sofia’s recipe for a fantastic read:
Add one smouldering ex-Marine and one smart-mouthed girl. Add a sprinkling of PTSD, a broken heart, some laughter and a cup of sexual tension. Mix well with a challenging road trip, and then watch the sparks fly.

When one touch isn’t enough, why resist?
Road trips are supposed to be fun. Or, at least, full of hot sex. For photographer Lilly Grayson, the fifteen-hour drive to her friend’s wedding with Nate Jennings will be neither. Not that Nate isn’t sexy—the man is six-foot-three-inches of mouth-watering Marine. But Lilly’s been there, done that…and he walked away. Now it’s time for a little payback. The kind that’ll make a man desperate for a taste of what he can’t have.
And Nate wants a taste—so badly that he can barely keep his hands on the wheel. But the scars and ghosts of his last tour still haunt him. He can’t give into temptation, not this time. Lilly deserves a whole man—one who can love her the way she deserves to be loved, even if she doesn’t believe it can happen. And that can’t be Nate. Not when he’s leaving again in two weeks, and this time, he’s not sure he’ll return…

I loved it!
Tempted by the Soldier was on my To Read list when I last posted, and I can definitely recommend it.
This book was SO much fun. I laughed aloud in a couple of places, reached for the tissues in another, and stayed up very late to finish it. What more can you ask for?
Nate Jennings started out as an A-Grade asshole. Lilly’s one-night stand, the year before, had proved that. For most of the past twelve months they’ve kept their distance, but that’s all about to change. Lilly has been hired to photograph her best friend’s wedding, to Nate’s brother, Jace. Not only does she have to play nicely with him at the wedding, she also has to accept his ride to get there, when her flights are cancelled.
It’s not a situation Nate is happy about.
“I really can’t see Lilly agreeing to go anywhere with me. The last time I saw her she all but threatened to castrate me if I came within twenty feet of her again.”
“I think you’re being a little dramatic,” Jace drawled.
“Dramatic?” Nate barked out a laugh. “Her exact words were ‘Come near me again and I’ll put your nuts in a wood chipper.’ It’s going to be kind of hard to keep that kind of distance if she’s sitting in the cab of my truck.”
Lilly’s even less pleased. She’d thought Nate to be special.
Paige was right. Lilly had let Nate in. She’d let him in because for the first time in a very long time, she’d actually found someone she liked. And in return, he’d proven that he was just like every other male on the planet— who thought with his dick instead of his brain. Lilly followed Paige’s interested gaze to two men standing in line. Cute. But neither sparked even a flicker of interest inside her. No one had since her night with Nate.
Yet another reason to hate him. The bastard had broken her libido with his wonder penis. Jerk.
I loved her way of dealing with his supreme asshole-ery.
Lilly flipped through the mental directory of colorful names she had reserved for Nate. Colonel Cranky. Sergeant Douchebag. General Jerk.
Lashing out wasn’t going to help. It would just make Jace feel like shit and make Nate feel even worse. They’d done this dance too many times to count in the beginning… back when he hadn’t yet figured out how to hide just how fucked-up he was inside. Since then he’d learned. Smile. Nod. Give Jace shit at appropriate times and keep a tight lid on the darkness that was eating him alive.
The moment when Nate arrives at the pick-up point—two hours late—is delicious, and sets the tone for the first half of the story.
The door dinged and, clenching her jaw, Lilly looked up to find Nate brushing rain off his black leather jacket. Six foot three of Marine-made muscle filled the entry door, looking like the shiny new toy most mothers warned their daughters not to touch.
Lilly has a sassy, smart mouth but Nate gives as good as he gets.
“Well, look who finally decided to show up.” Lilly stood, smoothing her dress over her thighs. “Sergeant Unreliable is alive and kicking, after all. And here I was hoping you’d fallen down a well or something.”
“You know, Lil, when I think about fifteen hours of you busting my balls,” Nate said, “I gotta say, the well sounds tempting.”
The only way Lilly will get through this trip, is by winding up Nate. Not only does she dress as provocatively as she can, but she goes for his weak points every time. I almost felt sorry for him.
“Could you get your feet off of the dash?” He scrubbed his fingers through his hair with his free hand, forcing patience into his voice. “I just waxed it.”
“What a coincidence,” she innocently mused. “I just waxed, too.”
Kill me. Kill me now.
She pulled off one of her high heels and shook the mud off. “Remind me to bring walking shoes the next time I take a road trip with you.”
He forced a laugh, and didn’t dwell on how good it felt to hear her talk about a next time. That was a can of worms he did not need to open. He wasn’t going to be around for a next time. And he didn’t have room for any new raw emotions right now. In that moment, standing at the steps to his childhood home, he felt too full of them already. Emotions bubbled inside him fighting for space.
I loved the way Nate had to work for his redemption. His character development was perfect, not too rushed, not too slow.
She’d seen him at his worst, and still…
She wanted him. Had cried for him. Had done everything she could to help heal him.
And he didn’t deserve any of it.
He scrubbed his hand over his face and fought the urge to throw something just to see it break… the way he was breaking inside.
What was this woman doing to him?
And then the bomb drops. Lilly finds out that Nate has already re-enlisted.
Pain exploded in her chest as reality hit her hard. He hadn’t told her because he’d never really wanted her. Had the past year taught her nothing? Once again, she’d allowed herself to become a distraction for him. An amusement to fill the time until he had something better to do.
“You never wanted me for anything more than sex, did you?” Her voice broke. “What was I? Just a way to pass the time? One last fuck for the road?”
I loved the broken Nate. Nicolette Day wrung so much emotion from this damaged man.
“All of those things I said to you last year… all of the times I pushed you away… I wasn’t trying to hurt you, Lilly. I was trying to save you.”
He exhaled, and moved a hand up to caress her face. Her lips. He finally took a deep breath and rested his forehead against hers.
“From me,” he whispered. “I was trying to save you from me.”
I read a magazine article recently, about the importance of a good grovel in romantic fiction. Nate has a LOT of grovelling to do, if he’s going to make up to Lilly.
You’ll have to read it, to find out if he does 🙂
